If someone does a small job for you as a favor, do they have the right to sue you for monetary compensation?

An ex-friend of mine installed a water heater in my basement as a favor, however now he is threatening to take me to small claims court unless i pay him $150. No contract was signed, nor did I ever agree to pay him for this work. What should I do? Does he have any grounds to do this?
