On what basis has power, privlidge and prestige been awarded to our citizens in the past?

Religious affiliation, Affluence, or hard work and dedication? Did the people you know that gave of their efforts freely and sweated out in the pits of society get the rewards, or was it given to the "saved" and affluent, the hard workers asked to listen to their sermons?
