My AT&T Blackjack cellphone; what is pound?

I'm trying to redo my voicemail message, but after I've finished with speaking the message, the voice says to press pound and I don't have any idea what that is! It's probably something really obvious, but I don't know. Please help? Thanks, I would really appreciate it! By the way, please don't add any rude or smart aleck comments. Thanks.
